Port Stop: Progreso, Mexico – A Colorful, Busy Adventure

Our cruise stop in Progreso, Mexico, was one to remember. It was different from any other port I’ve visited. I do admit I had never heard of Progreso before this cruise. Honestly, I thought it was the name of a spaghetti sauce! I must tell you, Progreso is not in Italy, btw!

Docking in an Industrial Port

The ship docked in an industrial area, surrounded by cargo containers and shipping equipment. It wasn’t the usual tourist-style port, but it was interesting to see a real working harbor in action.

Shuttle Ride into Town

To get into Progreso, we took a free shuttle bus. Progreso’s pier is one of the longest in the world, so walking is not an option. The ride was smooth and gave us time to look at the landscape.

A Bustling Market Experience

The shuttle dropped us off in a busy local marketplace. When we stepped off the bus, we were met with a crowd of vendors. They were friendly but very eager. Some aggressively pushed their wares, calling out for us to buy. To be honest, it felt a little overwhelming.

Walking to the Beach

We didn’t stay in the market long. We headed toward the beach, which was just a few blocks away. The walk was easy. Along the way, we passed small shops, restaurants, and bars. The town was full of animation.

Relaxing by the Gulf

The beach itself was free to access and had a fun local vibe. You could grab a cold drink, rent a chair, or even get a massage right on the sand. The breeze from the Gulf of Mexico was refreshing. It was a great place to relax after the busy market.

Heading Back to the Ship

After spending some time on the beach, we walked back the same way. To return to the ship, we had to go back through the market and board the shuttle bus again. The ride back was easy, and it felt good to be back on the ship after a busy day.

If I revisit Progreso, I’ll try to avoid the marketplace. It’s just a bit too much for me. I’ll head straight to the beach instead. It’s free, beautiful, and much more peaceful.

Tips for Visiting Progreso:

  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Bring small bills for tips or snacks.
  • Be ready for a high-energy market scene.
  • Head to the beach for a more relaxing time.
  • The shuttle bus is free both ways.

Progreso is a port full of local flavor. It may not be fancy, but it’s real. And sometimes, that’s the best kind of travel experience.
